In October, Colombia ruled the inline speed skating races of the World Skate Games in Asunción, Paraguay, and won the most speed skating medals. Two world records fell as racing began, and Corinne Stoddard, a US Olympic medalist on the ice, won a bronze on wheels.
Two world records in the sprint
In qualifying for the 200 m dual time trial, Santiago Vasquez of Colombia set a world record of 17.108 seconds, then took the final with 17.133. For the women, Ivonne Nochez Gallardo set a record of 18.389 for El Salvador in qualifying and came third in the final. Kollin Castro of Colombia won the women's title, her third world title in a row in the event, with teammate Geiny Pajaro second.
A bronze for the United States
Gabriela Rueda of Colombia won the women's 5000 m points by a single point over Camila Carreño of Chile, and Corinne Stoddard took the bronze. In February, Stoddard won a bronze on the ice for the US, a short track 1500 m medal from the Olympics in Milano Cortina. Jacob Melton of the US missed a bronze in the men's 200 m sprint after a skate off. Axel Moore, 17, of Sacramento raced his first world championships for Team USA, in the junior sprints.
The marathon
The speed program closed with a 42 km marathon through Asunción. Anandkumar Velkumar of India won the men's race in a sprint finish, ahead of Felix Rijhnen of Germany and Manuel Taibo of Spain. In the women's marathon, Johana Viveros won with Kollin Castro second and Yicel Camila Giraldo Vasquez third, a clean sweep for Colombia.

From wheels to the ice and back
Stoddard was a junior world champion on inline skates before she moved to short track, and this season she went back to her first sport. Plenty of ice speed skaters start the same way. The skates these racers use on track and road are inline speed skates like these.
